Civil War Era U.S. Martially Inspected New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

This is a nice example of a Civil War production Henry rifle manufactured in 1863 and in the correct serial number range for the 1,731 purchased by the government. The rifle has a plain brass frame, folding leaf rear sight and blade front sight (non-factory). The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "HENRY'S PAT.OCT.16.1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." ahead of the rear sight. Marked "CGC" for Charles G. Chapman, the government inspector, on the right barrel flat at the breech. Mounted with a smooth oil finished walnut stock with a brass buttplate with compartment containing a two-piece wooden cleaning rod. Most of the Henry Rifles manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company during the Civil War were privately purchased by individual Federal soldiers primarily in Illinois (such as the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment), Indiana and Kentucky. These rifles saw extensive service during the Atlanta Campaign and other battles in the western theater of operations.
