Factory Engraved William Greener "Indestructible by Gun Powder No. 1 Exposition. 1851." Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun

Manufactured c. 1851. The barrel rib has "WILLIAM. GREENER’S, LAMINATED STEEL. INDESTRUCTIBLE BY GUNPOWDER. NO. 1 EXPOSITION 1851." in inlay. The wrist escutcheon has a crest of a pelican vulning over a torse. 14 1/2" LOP. The Norman R. Blank Collection papers note that it was "made for 1851 International Exposition. Crystal Palace London." It was purchased by Blank through W. Keith Neal in February 1962. Another of these shotguns is in the Royal Armouries' Self Defense Gallery in Leeds (serial number 4236, object number: XII.5215). The Royal Armouries note their example as "one of his Presentation Grade shotguns, the finest of the five grades Greener manufactured." William Greener won two gold medals and a diploma at the first World's Fair in 1851 (The Great Exhibition). He also won awards at subsequent exhibitions, and a "No. 3 EXHIBITION NEW YORK 1853" shotgun example is known. Provenance: W. Keith Neal; The Norman R. Blank Collection
