Description:

This example stands far above the strong majority of these Russian contract examples witnessed today, as many of these saw hard use. Manufactured in 1916, this is one of the approximately 294,000 Model 1895 Muskets sold to the Imperial Russian Government between 1915 and 1916 for use in World War I, prior to cancellation of the contract due to tensions. These Russian contract examples are similar to the standard "musket," but with the distinctive stripper clip guide mounted on top of the receiver as chambered for the rimmed 7.62x54R Russian military cartridge. The top of the chamber has the Winchester factory proof over "7.62/M.M.", upper tang has the three-line model/trademark information, the left side of the receiver has the two-line address/patent marking, the right side of the receiver and buttstock are both stamped with boxed Russian acceptance stamps containing Cyrillic "XN3" (the "N" is backwards, transliterated as KhI3). Pinned blade front sight, ladder rear sight graduated to 3,200 arshins, full length finger groove forearm, upper handguard and carbine buttplate with compartment. Import marked receiver. Includes a bayonet with 15 5/8 inch blade and Winchester marked top of the hilt (does not fit on the rifle, slightly undersized attachments) and metal scabbard with leather frog.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine, retains 75% original blue finish with some areas of flaking showing smooth brown patina on the balance, minor denting visible at the left top edge of the rear sight base, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Wood is very fine with rich original oil finish, distinct edges and grasping grooves, some light scratches and dents, a crack visible on top of the handguard behind the rear sight, and an exceptionally crisp Russian acceptance stamp. Mechanically excellent. Bayonet and scabbard are very good. This attractive exceptional Imperial Russian contract Winchester Model 1895 Musket is a highly desirable item for any Winchester or Russian military arms collector!
