Manufactured c. 1870s-1880s with designs from Emil and Leo Nagant in Liege, based on a similar design as their smaller scale Gendarmerie double barrel pistols. The left side of the frame is marked "BREVET REMINGTON/694", and the right side has "BREVET NAGANT/694". The frame, breech block and trigger guard are exhibition quality panel scene engraved and feature a fox or wolf on the right, a running stag on the left, and a wild boar on the trigger guard. The Damascus barrels have a single brass bead sight on the solid rib marked "PH. RHEINBERGER IN NEUSTADT A/H" in gold inlay, and chambers measuring 3 inches with a single extractor. "39900" is marked on the rib covered by the forend and is repeated on the frame along with "863" the Liege "perron" inspection mark, an "M" and a "crown/V" marking. The "crown/V" is also marked on the inside of the trigger guard, and the bolt retaining the barrels is also marked "863." The gun features double triggers, a smooth forearm with horn tip inlay and "LEI POULLAIN" marked on the inside, a scrolling horn grip extension, and a straight grip stock a cheek piece, 1/2 inch butt extension of a different species of wood, and a smooth steel buttplate. Sling swivels are mounted to the barrels and butt. Stock measurements: 1 7/8 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 13 7/8 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 4 oz.
Very good with mostly gray patina, light brown and Damascus patterns on the barrels, replacement upper tang screw, and mild wear. The revarnished wood is also very good with some minor repairs and chips, attractive flame figure, and mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
