Ornate European Wheellock Rifle with Inlaid and Engraved Stock and Relief Chiseled Barrel

This beautifully embellished wheellock rifle from c. 1600 is being de-accessioned from the famous George F. Harding Jr. Collection at the Art Institute of Chicago (reference number 1982.3313). The rifle was purchased by Mr. Harding from W. H. Fenton in 1925. It was remounted with another antique barrel and lock in the late 19th century. Many similar pieces were purchased by other wealthy collectors as well as prestigious museums. The barrel has a false "vent" at the breech and a vent covered by the lock, six-groove rifling, a silver band near the muzzle, a blade front sight, two leaf rear sight, and relief chiseled decoration including foliate designs, scrollwork, and classical figures. The lock has a domed wheel cover and no visible markings. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers and a finger groove trigger guard. The stock has extensive engraved staghorn, bone, and/or ivory inlays in scroll, foliate, martial and animal motifs. The butt has a coat of arms. Provenance: W. H. Fenton; The George F. Harding Jr. Collection; The Art Institute of Chicago

ConditionGood with silver-gray patina and mild pitting on the iron, repaired trigger guard, generally distinct engraving on the inlays, some repairs and splices in the stock, small pieces of inlay absent, and general mild overall wear. The set triggers function. The lock was not tested.
