Attractive Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian Second Model Single Action Revolver with Shoulder Stock

Manufactured c. 1873 to 1878, this is an extremely attractive example of a Smith & Wesson No. 3 Russian Second Model revolver, fitted for a desirable shoulder stock by the S&W factory during its original production. The Russian Second Model revolvers were procured in large numbers by the Russian government, with smaller Japanese and Turkish contracts also being fulfilled. So, while 85,200 total were produced, there were only around 6,200 commercial variations made and only a small number of them were equipped with shoulder stocks, making them quite scarce, and thus seldom ever seen. The Second Model fitted with a shoulder stock is by far the most rare of the three Russian models produced with stocks and only a few are known in collectors hands today. These commercial guns were numbered in the 32800-39000 serial number range, which was a continuation of the No. 3 American serial numbers. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard one line address and patent dates ending with "RUSSIAN MODEL". The serial number is only partial visible on the butt ("35[ ][ ]7") due to the notch cut for the shoulder stock, a common trait of the stocked Russian models, while the full serial number "35497" is stamped inside the right grip. The assembly number "503" is stamped on the right of the grip frame, rear face of the cylinder, and the bottom of the barrel latch. It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, distinctive small screw on the top strap, notch rear sight on top of the barrel latch, a pronounced knuckle on the back strap, a spur trigger guard, a lanyard loop on the butt, and a pair of smooth walnut grips. The back strap was cut in production for the fitting of the shoulder stock, with a rectangular notch in the butt and two mounting points higher up the back strap, and has a smooth metal buttplate as seen on all the original No. 3 Russian shoulder stocks. Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection

ConditionVery fine, retains 85% plus of the original blue finish and strong traces of the original case colors with some light wear and handling marks, some brown freckling on the cylinder, and a few minor dings. The grips are also very fine with some scattered light dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The restored stock is also very fine with 85% of the blue finish, a discreet splice in the toe on the refurbished wood, and a few light handling marks. One of the finest known examples of a most rare and desirable S&W shoulder stocked 2nd Model Russian that one could hope to find.
