Stunning John Weyerts Master Engraved Roger Kurtz Deluxe Upgraded Cased Two Barrel Set Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Takedown Rifle in .45-90 W.C.F. with Extra Barrel in .45-70 W.C.F., Deluxe Takedown Case, and Tom Selleck Letter

Originally manufactured in 1916, this once "well-used" Winchester Model 1886 takedown rifle was saved for posterity by the legendary American actor Tom Selleck, who sent the rifle to Roger Kurtz to be given a second life so it could become one of Selleck's treasured personal hunting rifles. A letter from Tom Selleck is included with the rifle in which he notes that Rock Island Auction Company customers have likely come to know by now that he is an admirer of the restoration work done by Kurtz and that he is proud to say that because of this company, his genius work is finally better known. We here at Rock Island Auction Company certainly agree with Mr. Selleck's assessment, the restoration work of Mr. Kurtz is truly a testament to the mastery of his craft, and it's truly rare that we see Winchester firearms restored and preserved in such a beautiful and tasteful way, while remaining true to the original work done by the craftsmen at Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Selleck notes in his letter that Kurtz would never do anything that the Winchester factory wouldn't have done, and this rifle is no exception. He states that everything on this rifle is correct right down to the twist rate in the newly made barrels, that the rifle was engraved by Master Engraver John Weyerts, and that the pattern was inspired by the factory engraved Model 1886 pictured on p. 237 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson. The main difference in the engraving being the game scene on the left of the receiver, which on this rifle features a bear that was heavily inspired by the bear engraved on the stock plate on Teddy Roosevelt's personal Model 1876 rifle, which is on display at the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site in New York. Selleck notes that he hunted with this rifle for several years, taking a Rock Mountain elk, as well as two mule deer, one with each of the barrels, and that he hopes the new owner will treasure this masterfully preserved rifle as much as he has. This beautifully preserved takedown Model 1886 shows wonderfully executed factory pattern engraving by Weyerts, which encompasses most of the receiver. The previously mentioned "Roosevelt bear" scene is on the left surrounded by floral scroll, while more scrollwork occupies most of the right side of the receiver, all surrounded by a gadrooned borders. The scrollwork continues onto the top and bottom of the receiver, breech end of the barrels, the forearm caps, the lever, the hammer, the upper tang, the buttplate, and even the Lyman sight. Mr. Selleck's initials "T.W.S." are inlaid in gold on the bottom of the receiver. Both of the barrels are marked with the standard two-line address and the caliber markings at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model and trademark information, while the serial number is on the lower tang. The currently fitted .45-90 W.C.F. barrel is fitted with a beaded blade Lyman "Jack sight" in the front dovetail, a blank filler in the rear dovetail, and a Lyman No. 21 peep sight mounted on the left side of the receiver. The included 20 inch octagon barrel in .45-70 W.C.F. is fitted with a Marble No. 3 combination beaded blade front sight, a blank filler in the rear dovetail, and matching forearm cap and forearm to the .45-90 barrel. Both forearm caps are fitted with sling swivel eyes and another is fitted on the bottom of the stock. It is mounted with a very finely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and straight grip stock with a smooth steel shotgun buttplate. Included with the rifle is a very attractive, deluxe, leather wrapped oak Ray Sterrett takedown case, fitted for both barrels and the stocked receiver, and containing an included leather sling and oil bottle. The lid of the case has a brass escutcheon engraved by Weyerts with a matching "Roosevelt bear", along with Selleck's "T-Lazy S" brand (also on the oiler lid), and outlined with lightly tooled leather from Big Bend Saddlery in Alpine, Texas. Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection

ConditionExceptionally fine as masterfully deluxe upgraded by Roger Kurtz and beautifully engraved by John Weyerts, retaining 97% plus of the high polish blue finishes on both of the barrel sets with some light edge wear, light rotational wear on the magazine tubes, and 90% plus of the subtly vibrant case colors with the balance an attractive smooth grey patina. The hand-crafted, artisanal, deluxe wood is also excellent with a few scattered very light dings and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This Winchester Model 1886 is truly a masterpiece of preservation by gifted artisans Roger Kurtz and John Weyerts, that was ordered by and hunted with by the legendary Hollywood actor Tom Selleck!
