U.S. H. Deringer Contract Model 1817 Flintlock Musket

This is a very good example of a U.S. Model 1817 musket that was manufactured by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deringer produced approximately 13,000 of these muskets. The Deringer produced muskets had notable differences between the Springfield manufactured Model 1817s such as the trigger plate without the pistol grip projection and the sling swivel mounted on the trigger guard. The center of the lock plate is marked with a large "US" over "H. DERINGER / PHILADA". There are no visible manufacturer dates. The top of the barrel is marked "GF / P / US". Blade front and notch rear sights, three barrel bands, patchbox and iron ramrod with brass tip. The left stock flat is marked "F" and a period carved "BSB" (the "S" is backwards) on the left side of the buttstock.

ConditionVery good. The metal surfaces exhibit dark spotting with the bright finish having turned to a light brown patina. There is some moderate pitting. The stock is fine as period repaired around the lock plate with a piece having been glued back in place. The left stock flat and the patch box have minor, barely noticable, hairline cracks. Overall, there are some minor dings, dents, chips and scratches and some moderate gouges. The markings are clear and crisp. Mechanically fine.
