U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1816 Flintlock Musket

This Type III Model 1816 musket was manufactured in 1833. The Model 1816 Musket was the primary infantry long arm during the Mexican War and many muskets were converted to percussion in the 1850s. They were extensively issued by both the Federal and Confederate armies during the first two years of the Civil War. This musket has a National Armory bright finish. The lock plate is marked "SPRING / FIELD / 1833" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and "eagle/shield/U.S." stamped beneath the brass flash pan. The barrel tang is dated "1833". "P / eagle head / V" proof followed by "8". The stock is the correct full length military version. The left side stock flat has two circular script cartouches ("EG' and "SWP") and two stampings behind the trigger guard plate ("NM" and a script "JS" cartouche). The buttplate tang is marked "US" and "A / 19". Has the iron trumpet ramrod and leather sling.

ConditionVery good as possibly reconverted to flintlock. The barrel is mostly a brown patina between the breech and rear barrel band with dark spotting overall. There is matching patina on the barrel bands and trigger guard. The buttplate has a smooth dark patina. The bright finish has turned to a soft yellow patina on the rest of the metal surfaces. The stock is fine with some minor to moderate dings, dents and scratches and a few moderate gashes. The stock markings are legible but are weak. The rest of the markings are clear and crisp. The sling is very good with some heavy age cracking.
