Fine U.S. Pomeroy Model 1840 Flintlock

A scarce example of one of the 7000 U.S M1840 Flintlock Muskets manufactured by Lemuel Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts between 1840 and 1846. The musket is 'National Armory Bright' and has an oil-finished walnut stock. The lock plate is convex behind the hammer and flat with beveled edges in front of it and has a detachable brass pan with high fence and a hammer with the distinctive circular opening in the center. The side plate is the distinctive narrow pattern also used on the M1842 Musket. The bayonet lug is located on the bottom of the barrel. The musket is fitted with a trumpet-shaped iron ramrod. The lock plate is stamped "1844/U.S." in two vertical lines behind the hammer. A eagle and shield motif above "L. POMEROY" is stamped in front of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1844". "U.S./ESA" and an indented "P" proofmark are stamped on the upper left side of the barrel perpendicular to the bore. The left stock flat is stamped with a script/oval "HB" sub-inspector's mark and a script, oval "WAT" final inspection mark. Small "B" sub-inspection marks are present on the stock and barrel. The Model 1840 Musket was the last standard production model of a regulation U.S. flintlock musket.

ConditionFine. The musket has been lightly cleaned and the barrel and bands have some scattered but very light pitting. There is light flash-pitting on the barrel surrounding the flash hole. The lock and barrel markings are sharp. The stock has been cleaned but remains in very fine condition with sharp edges, crisp inspection marks and minimal handling wear. The musket is in the original flintlock configuration. Mechanically excellent.
