Description:

This rifle's serial number dates to c. September 1863 during the middle of the American Civil War per page 71 of Wiley Sword's "The Historic Henry Rifle." The serial number is visible on top of the barrel at the breech and was also later marked on the left side of the lower tang ("2" double struck) and inside of the buttplate solid buttplate. The rifle features the alternate rear sight dovetail on the receiver and sling loop and swivel mounted on the left. The buttstock also has a filled slot from a lower sling swivel mount. Henry rifles were among the most advanced firearms of the Civil War and are believed to have been primarily privately purchased for use by Union soldiers. They naturally continued to be widely used on the frontier after the war as settlers headed westward in larger numbers leading to conflict with various Native American nations. Like the pioneers, the native warriors also adopted the Henry as a force multiplier on the battlefield and found it suited to their styles of warfare.

Rating Definition:

Good with an attractive "frontier issued" appearance overall, dark brown patina on the iron, replacement buttstock, frame tangs, and buttplate suggesting the rifle had once been damaged from being used as a club in battle, some replacement small parts, and general moderate overall wear. Mechanically functions.
