This is a Winchester Model 1876 Rifle that was manufactured in 1885. The rifle has the third style receiver with integral dust cover guide and dust cover with serrated rear edge. The top of the dust cover is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." The round barrel has a dovetailed mount front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding ladder rear sight marked "1876" and graduated to 1,000 yards. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER"S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight and "50 CAL" at the breech. The caliber "50-95" is engraved on the bottom of the loading gate. The top of the receiver tang is marked: "{MODEL 1876}" in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. The serial number is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with steel forend cap and buttplate. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap. The Winchester Model 1876 was the first repeating rifle to chamber the powerful cartridges previously only available in single-shot rifles. All Winchester Model 1876 rifles are very desirable. The Model 1876 rifles with 26 inch barrels chambered for the Winchester .50-95. Express cartridge was introduced in 1879, rifles chambered for the .50-95 WCF are collectible.
