Description:

This example was manufactured in 1878 with the First Model's distinctive dust cover with checkered oval thumb rest fitted in guide grooves on the top of the frame. Later models had a center rail and transitioned to a dust cover with serrations at the end. It features German silver blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights with a barrel stamped with the two line address/patent dates marking on the top. The upper tang is stamped "MODEL 1873" in while the lower tang has the serial number; both are in script. It is fitted with a full length magazine, smooth forearm with cap and straight grip stock with crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included). The caliber is not designated on the barrel or elevator the early production rifles were all chambered for the .44-40 cartridge.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. This rifle retains 70% plus of the original blue finish with the finish thinning to a brown patina. The barrel and magazine tube have some scratches and marks with the finish thinning in areas to a brown patina and some brighter oxidation in the scratches. The frame has some scratches and marks and the left side has a mottled brown patina ahead of the sideplate with significant finish retention on the other areas while the right side of the frame has a smoother brown patina with good finish retention on the sideplate and rear section. The lever has a brown patina and the buttplate has a mottled gray patina. The brass buttplate compartment door and the elevator have an aged patina with a darker coloration on the door and a more golden yellow tone on the elevator. The wood is also very fine with overall dents and marks. Some small slivers of wood are absent on the wrist on the edges around the lower tang. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.
