Special Order Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Rifle with Winchester Museum Letter and Hand Written Buffalo Bill Historical Center Research Letter

The included letter confirms the rifle's configuration, caliber, round barrel, half magazine, and plain trigger as well as the fact that the rifle was originally fitted with a shotgun butt and rubber buttplate but was then changed to a rifle butt on October 11, 1906 by "Russ". The second letter notes that "Mr. Russell was the foreman of the repair and alteration shop. Any changes made in guns before they were shipped, as was done to yours, were sent to Mr. Russell's alteration shop." The rifle was originally received in the warehouse on August 23, 1906, then sent for alterations, returned, and finally shipped out on August 13, 1908. The barrel has a folding bead/target front sight with an elevation adjustable rear sight and is marked with the two- line address and patent information ahead of the rear sight and "30 W.C.F." at the breech. The upper left barrel flat is marked "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER". The "WP" proof is present on the barrel and frame at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the model designation and trade mark in three lines. The serial number is marked on the front of the frame. It is fitted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with forend cap and crescent buttplate.

ConditionVery fine. The rifle retains 75% of the original finish with some finish thinning on the barrel, edge wear, and most of the blue remaining on the frame with a gray/brown patina on the exposed surfaces on the frame, lever, lower tang, and buttplate. The wood is fine with an overcoat of protective varnish applied on the glossy buttstock and forearm with some minor scratches, dings, and marks. Mechanically excellent.
