Scarce Two Digit New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action No. 1 Pocket Pistol

Early example of a No. 1 Volcanic Pocket Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., in 1857. This diminutive lever-action pistol has a 3 1/2 inch octagon barrel with integral six-shot magazine, distinctive brass receiver and finger ring loading lever. The barrel has a pinch-top front sight. A fixed rear sight is mounted in a dovetail on the receiver. The legend "NEW HAVEN CONN/ PATENT FEB. 14. 1854" is roll-stamped in two lines on the top barrel flat. The serial number, "43" is stamped on the left side of the butt beneath the grips and on the right side of the loading lever. The barrel has a blue finish, the hammer and finger-ring lever are color casehardened and the two-piece walnut grips have a high polish varnish finish. The omission of the "VOLCANIC" markings on the barrel indicates that the pistol was manufactured after Oliver Winchester assumed control of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., and reorganized the company as the New Haven Arms Co., in April 1857. The New Haven Arms Co. manufactured approximately 850 No. 1 Pocket Pistols between 1857 and 1862. The self-contained cartridge, spring loaded magazine and toggle lever action of the Volcanic pistols and carbines were key elements in the evolution of the Henry rifle design and subsequent development of the Winchester Model 1866, 1873 and 1876 rifles.

ConditionGood as partially refinished (barrel assembly). There are traces of pitting on the top of the barrel; most of the dull period refinished blue finish is present on the sides and bottom of the barrel. Most of the dove-gray casehardened finish is present on the hammer. The lever has a silver-gray patina with traces of pitting. The brass receiver is in very good condition and has an attractive, un-polished patina. The side-plate joints are tight and wear is limited to a few minor scratches and handling marks. The grips are in very good condition and retain half or more of the piano finish.
