Fine Engraved Nickel Plated Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine

This is a fine example of quite possibly a factory engraved nickel plated Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine that was manufactured in 1871 (we have no factory record available to us). The receiver, tangs and bottom of the cartridge carrier are decorated with floral scroll designs. The front and rear sides of the receiver have a geometric border, and there is a scallop border on the front and rear of the receiver. In addition, there is a squirrel in the center on the left front and a deer in a floral vine bordered oval on the right side. The buttplate tang has the same floral scroll design. The deer scene is very similar to the example on page 97 of THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING that is attributed to Conrad Ulrich who was known to use a wide variety of border designs. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEWHAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860". The serial number is marked on the lower tang. There is a small "L.C." or "I.C." mark on the lower tang. There is a dovetailed blade front sight mounted on the front barrel band and a fixed iron rear sight. Saddle ring and staple on the left side of the receiver, all nickel finish and mounted with a smooth nicely figured walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included) and sling swivels.

ConditionFine. The carbine retains 70% original, untouched, nickel finish with scattered flaking and edge wear. The exposed brass on the receiver and buttplate has an aged patina. The wood is also fine with almost all of the refreshened varnish remaining and shows some scattered minor dings and scratches. The side plates joints are excellent. Consignors notes state that it is "all matching". The barrel marking is faded but legible. The engraving is crisp. The action is fine. A nice, rare factory engraved and nickel plated Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine.
