Special Order Atlanta Police Department Factory Inscribed Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle

Manufactured in 1889, this rifle is 1 of a group of Winchester Model 1873 rifles with 44 caliber octagon barrels purchased by the Atlanta Police Department in the late 1880s. All were factory inscribed "Atlanta Police" with a large number above on the left side plate and were equipped with sling swivels. This particular rifle has the large number "49" above the inscription and this rifle has the Third Model integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The top barrel flat is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860". The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is marked "44 CAL" in script letters. The serial number is stamped in script on the lower tang. It features a blade front and adjustable buckhorn rear sights. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" between two foliate designs. It has a blue finish with full magazine and casehardened hammer and lever and is mounted on a oil finished walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The buttstock has a hidden compartment for a cleaning rod (not included).

ConditionFair as modified. The rifle has light oxidation and a silver/grey patina overall. The casehardened hammer and lever have a smooth grey patina. The brass elevator has a smooth dark patina. The revarnished wood is good with some scattered minor dings, scratches, and pressure dents. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
