Deluxe Factory Engraved New Haven Arms Henry Lever Action Rifle

Henry lever action rifle that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. November 1864. The rifle has a gold-plated brass receiver and crescent buttplate and is factory engraved. The engraving covers the sides and top of the receiver and butt plate heel and features floral and scroll patterns on a punch-dot background with scallop and line borders. Large flowers are engraved on the both sides of the front of the receiver and a game scene with running deer is engraved on the left side plate. This is standard Henry rifle engraving that was probably executed by the New Haven Arms Company factory engraver, Samuel J. Hoggson. The rifle has the late production features which include: (1) square back, nickel-silver front sight blade, (2) second style barrel legend, (3) large magazine follower and beveled receiver follower cut, (4) sling swivel on the left side of the butt and sling hook loop on the left side of the barrel and (5) buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The folding leaf rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and slide stop screw. The barrel is roll-stamped with the larger, second style, legend: "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO.NEWHAVEN.CT." with all serif letters. The serial number, "7028" is stamped: (1) on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver, (2) on the left side of the lower receiver tang, (3) in the upper tang inlet of the replacement stock and (4) on the inside of the buttplate. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style, cap head, screws on the butt plate and receiver are correctly not serial numbered. The octagon barrel and integral magazine are blued and the hammer, trigger and lever are color case-hardened. The stock is select, well figured walnut with a varnish finish. The rifle is complete with the late pattern, four-piece, jointed steel, cleaning rod with brass tip and a very rare factory sling with brass buckle and hook.

ConditionVery good as partially restored. The barrel and integral magazine have a smooth, gray-brown patina with sharp edges. The legend and serial number are crisp. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to a mottled, gray-brown patina. The brass receiver and buttplate retain most of the gold-plated finish. The side plate joints are tight and free from pry marks. The engraving is extremely sharp. The professionally made, highly figured replacement stock is in very fine condition. This is a solid representative example of a factory engraved Henry lever action rifle.
