Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1895. The rifle has a special order half-round/half-octagon barrel with half magazine, deluxe fancy grain walnut checkered forearm and straight grip stock with shotgun buttplate. The receiver, upper barrel flat and forearm cap are custom engraved with scrolls and embossed borders, and there is a game scene with a whitetail deer engraved on the left side of the receiver. The custom engraving is well executed and is very similar to Winchester No. 10 factory engraving but is somewhat less detailed. The barrel has a Lyman Winchester Express front sight with white bead and a buckhorn sporting style rear sight with serrated edges and adjustable center piece. The barrel is blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever, and buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm have a highly polished piano finish. The top of the barrel has the legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" roll-stamped in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "40-70 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver surrounded by punch-dot and scallop highlights. "-MODEL 1886.-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the hammer, and the serial number "106876" is stamped behind the tang screw.

Good as custom engraved. The rifle has an artificial gray brown patina on the barrel, receiver and small parts. Metal surfaces are smooth with some patches of age discoloration on the barrel. The well-executed engraving is sharp. The factory markings are crisp. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are in very good condition and retain at least 75% of the high polish piano finish. The recut checkering is sharp, and the stock and forearm show only light-moderate handling wear. This is a good looking example of a special order, Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with good quality engraving.
