Scarce Factory Engraved Two Barrel Remington Model 17 Grade D "Peerless" Slide Action Shotgun

Manufactured circa 1921-1933, this shotgun was special ordered as a "Peerless" Grade D Model 17, which received attention from the Remington Custom Shop in the form of a full and detailed hand-fitting of components, fine walnut furniture and a light decorative engraving. In addition to those features, this Model 17 is also outfitted with a pair of barrels, both solid ribbed, 2 3/4 inch chambers, hand-engraved model markings, 2 inch wedges of scroll engraving at the breeches, numbered to match and bear the date code "LX", indicating that they (and likely the rest of the shotgun) were produced in February of 1929. One barrel is 31 3/4 inches with a single nickel bead and "FULL" marked choke; the other is 26 inches (22 without compensator) with a single bead sight and a spreader choke tube on a Cutts compensator. The receiver is decorated with scroll engraving, punch-dot accents and zig-zagged borders with about 80% engraving coverage and the model and serial number on the underside and the "Remington/TRADE MARK" on the action bar all hand-cut. Checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with light zig-zag and punch dot border work on the forearm hardware, a Remington hard rubber grip pad, serrated Remington buttplate and a 14 1/2 inch length of pull. Stock measurements are: Drop at comb 1 3/4 inches; Drop at heel 2 3/4 inches; 1/8 inch cast on; 0 toe; Overall weight 6 Lbs. 4.6 Oz.

ConditionVery fine with 85% of the original blue finish. The overall appearance is of a shotgun that was well used, but also well cared for, with a bright gray patina on the magazine tube and barrel underside from contact with the forearm, bright wear along the high edges, and scattered minor handling marks. The full choke barrel shows more use than the Cuts barrel. Stock is fine with a tiny crack on top of the wrist, mild crazing/scuffing of the varnish, and a few mild dents. Mechanically excellent.
