The Only Known Matching Pair of Consecutively Serial Numbered Volcanic Arms Lever Action Carbines with 16 1/2 Inch Barrel

A) Volcanic Carbine

Manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. circa 1855-1857, these carbines were manufactured prior to the reorganization into the New Haven Arms Company. In July of 1855, the Smith & Wesson name was changed to the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company and carried the name until 1857 when it was reorganized by Oliver F. Winchester to the New Haven Arms Company. Each of these matching carbines have a 16 1/2 inch blue octagon barrel and integral magazine, brass receiver, and casehardened hammer and loading lever. The top barrel flat is marked "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854". The matching serial number is marked on the left side of the frame under the grip panel, on the underside of the receiver and on the right side of the lever. These are designed to accommodate a shoulder stock, which is absent from both carbines. The barrel is fitted with an iron post sight, and there is an adjustable rear sight dovetailed to the receiver. Fitted with smooth replacement rosewood grips. The revolutionary Volcanic repeating carbines and pistols featured self-cocking lever actions, integral magazines and were chambered for a cartridge with self-contained propellant and primer. Although the Volcanic pistols and carbines were not a commercial success, the development of reliable cartridges allowed the Volcanic Lever Action and integral magazine to serve as the basis for the Henry Rifle and the Model 1866 Winchester. A total of only about 300 of these carbines were manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. making these the rarest of the Volcanic firearms. Comes with an informational and research letter from noted firearms expert and author R.L. Wilson.

ConditionVery good as refinished with a smooth mottled brown patina on the barrel/magazine and a dark patina on the hammer and lever. The lever also shows some minor oxidation. The receiver has an aged patina. The grips are excellent with a couple of very small dents and light handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is fine.

B) Volcanic Carbine

Described in "A" with the addition of the matching serial number also stamped on the inside of each grip panel.

ConditionVery good as refinished with traces of blue finish visible in protected areas of the barrel/magazine with a smooth brown patina on the balance. There is a dark patina on the hammer and lever, and some minor pitting on the hammer. The receiver has an aged patina. The grips are good with most of the varnish remaining and shows some lower edge wear, a minor crack on the bottom of the left panel, and overall some scattered minor dents and dings. The barrel marking is partially visible. The action is fine. An extremely rare opportunity to purchase the only known matched pair of consecutively serial numbered Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. carbines.
