Presentation Royal Navy Officer's Sword with gold plated lion-head pommel and hilt and inscribed 31-inch blade. The acid etched blade is inscribed on the obverse: "GUILDHALL 5TH OCTOBER 1882 / PRESENTED WITH THE FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF LONDON AND AN ADDRESS OF THANKS AND CONGRATULATION / BY THE CORPORATION OF THE SAID CITY TO ADMIRAL SIR FREDERICK, BEAUCHAMP, PAGET, SEYMOUR, G.C.B. FOR THE ABLE AND GALLANT SERVICES IN EGYPT / RENDERED BY HIM TOGETHER WITH THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF ALL ARMS AND RANKS UNDER HIS COMMAND". This sword was presented to Admiral Seymour who commanded the Mediterranean Fleet and was in charge of bombardment of Alexandria, Egypt, during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882. Frederick Seymour (1821-1895) entered the Royal Navy in 1834. He fought in the Crimean War, the Maori War and the Anglo-Egyptian War. For his service in the Anglo-Egyptian War he was created Baron Alcester, awarded the freedom of the City of London and presented with this Sword of Honor. In addition to the gold plated pommel and guard the sword has a deluxe, sharkskin grip with twisted wire wrap. Both sides of the blade are fully covered with intricate acid-etched engraving with dry needle highlights. The sword is complete with a gold worsted knot and has a black leather scabbard with gold plated brass throat, band and drag, Royal Navy presentation swords are rare and very historic weapons. This sword, presented to the Commander of the British Mediterranean Fleet by the City of London, following the successful conclusion of the Anglo-Egyptian War is a rare and important piece of the history of the British Empire.

ConditionExcellent. The gold plated hilt and scabbard components retain nearly all of the original finish. The shark skin grip cover shows high point wear but remains in very fine to excellent condition.
