Very Fine Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine

This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1892 saddle ring carbine that was manufactured in 1916. The carbine has a 20 inch round barrel with full length magazine. The barrel has a steel block front sight mounted behind the upper barrel band and a folding leaf rear sight. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The forearm is secured by a single barrel band and the stock has a steel, carbine style buttplate. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN.CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884." in two lines between the barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber designation: "44 W.C.F." is roll-stamped along the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. Oval Winchester "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The serial number, "846152", is roll-stamped across the bottom of the receiver just behind the junction with the forearm. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped and roll-stamped: "MODEL 1892/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. & FGN." in three lines.

ConditionVery fine. The carbine is all original and retains 80% of the original blue finish overall. The barrel has most of the finish; wear is limited to several small spots of light pitting on the right side behind the front sight. The magazine has more than 85% of the blue finish with several small spots of finish loss. Nearly all of the finish is present on the upper barrel band; the lower barrel band shows light handling wear and retains about 40% of the thinning blue finish. The receiver has scattered age spotting which is more pronounced on contact points and scuff marks on the left side from contact with the sling ring. The blue on the upper and lower tang is thin with traces of brown age patina. The bolt retains nearly all of the original finish, and most of the blue is present on the loading gate. More than 90% of the blue finish is present of the hammer, trigger and loading lever. The buttplate has a smooth brown patina. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. The action functions perfectly. The straight grain American walnut stock and forearm retain most of the original oil finish and are in excellent overall condition. Wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks on the underside of the stock behind the lever. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1892 carbine. Most Model 1892 carbines were purchased as working firearms and typically saw hard use. Carbines like this example that show only careful handling wear and have much of the original finish are very difficult to find.
