Scarce Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Extra Lightweight Rifle with Factory Letter

This Winchester Model 1886 Extra Lightweight rifle was manufactured in 1900. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter which describes it as: "Rifle, 45/70 caliber, Barrel Length: 22 inches, Barrel Shape: Round, Plain trigger, Full magazine, Shotgun butt with rubber butt plate, Extra light, and "Smokeless". The letter states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on November 2, 1900. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The barrel has the Lyman "Hunting Front Sight" with colored insert that was standard on Extra Lightweight rifles and a stamped steel buckhorn sporting style rear sight. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a folding combination rear sight. The black checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate is embossed with the circular "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" logo. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is stamped on the top of the barrel immediately in front of the receiver and "N.S." (Nickel Steel) is stamped below the caliber mark on the left side of the barrel. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "- MODEL 1886 -". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the script serial number, "122828" behind the tang screw.

ConditionFine. The rifle retains 50% of the original blue finish overall. There are several small patches of pitting on the right side of the barrel between the forearm cap and the barrel band. The blue on the right side of the magazine between the forearm cap and the barrel band is thin and has several spots of light pitting. The forearm cap has about 70% of the blue with some finish loss and age discoloration on the left side. The receiver has about 50% of the thinning blue finish with a silver gray patina on the bottom, top and high points. The bolt retains nearly all of the original blue. The loading gate has 30% of the nitre blue finish. The case colors on the hammer, lever, and trigger have faded to a silver-gray patina. The rear sight is a period replacement. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The forearm is in very good condition, and the buttstock exhibits a dowel pin repair on the right side of wrist and hairline cracks extending from the tangs. The wood overall has a few scattered handling and storage marks. This is a solid representative example of a desirable Winchester Model 1886 Extra Lightweight Rifle .
