Manufactured from 1910 to 1917, the No. 440 was Stevens offering of a deluxe, factory engraved variant to its High Power lever action rifle series. The receiver features beautifully executed scroll engraving on a dot background with various types of engraved border motifs that range from a simple scallop design to fine scrolls. An engraved panel of a bear in an open field is featured among the scrollwork on the left side of the receiver. The top of the receiver is tapped for sight/scope mounting and has scrollwork at the ends on a full dot background. A folding peep sight is mounted on the upper tang. The lever has a fan style engraving on the sides at the top and the underside of the lever has scrollwork at the top followed by full length geometric line borders. Standard Stevens markings are stamped on the sides of the barrel at the breech. The barrel is fitted with a blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight. It has a two-third length magazine tube and full loop lever. The bolt is jeweled, and the hammer and trigger have a niter blue finish with the remaining surfaces blue. Mounted with a high figured, high gloss forearm and straight grip stock with multi-point checkering and a crescent buttplate which is checkered with scrollwork at the toe and heel.
