Fine Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1898. This is a fine example of a very desirable Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine with the early casehardened receiver. Winchester discontinued the casehardened receiver on the Model 1886 in 1901. This carbine also has a special order crescent (rifle) buttplate. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two-line address and "40-65/W.C.F." at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-," and the serial number is on the lower tang. Pinned blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to "9" (900 yards). Full length magazine tube, saddle ring and stud on the left rear of the receiver, blue barrel, barrel bands, saddle ring, stud and magazine tube, casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the carbine configuration, caliber, rifle butt and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse to order number 14757 on November 18, 1898.

ConditionFine. The barrel and magazine tube have 40% original blue with the balance a smooth bluish brown patina. The bolt retains 95% original bright blue finish. The receiver retains 30% vivid original case colors with a smooth, mottled gray patina on the balance. The hammer retains most of the original case colors and the lever has a smooth gray patina with strong original case colors in protected areas. The buttplate has a smooth gray patina. The wood is also fine with a faint crack visible at upper right side of wrist. Some scattered minor pressure dents, dings and scratches on the balance. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
