Rare Documented Factory Engraved Special Order Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Fancy Sporting Rifle

Winchester Model 1892 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1918. This rifle is illustrated and described on page 256 of "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson and on pages 384 and 385 of "THE Winchester Book" by George Madis. The rifle has a 24-inch octagon barrel and full length magazine and 1x fancy grade walnut forearm and pistol grip stock. The stock and forearm have Winchester "Style H" checkering. The pistol grip has a black, hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The barrel has a Lyman "Jack" front sight with colored bead and a sporting style rear sight with flat top. A Lyman folding combination rear sight is mounted on the receiver tang. Factory sling swivel eyes are fitted to the forearm cap and stock. The left barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. PATENTED OCTOBER 14. 1884." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "25-20 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. Oval Winchester "W/P" proofmarks are stamped on the top barrel flat and the top of the receiver. The serial number, "881840", is stamped across the bottom of the receiver behind the forearm. The forearm cap, breech end of the barrel, top, bottom and sides of the receiver and buttplate heel are engraved with Winchester No.6 factory engraving. This engraving is illustrated on page 15 of "Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Highly Finished Arms" reproduced on page 226 of "Winchester Engraving". The engraving features detailed game scenes on both sides of the receiver with scrolls, borders, lines and ribbons. The Madis description of this rifles states that the engraving was executed by William Stokes. Factory engraved Winchester Model 1892 rifles are rare and very desirable.

ConditionVery fine. 95% of the slightly faded original blue remains on the barrel and magazine. The barrel markings are sharp. The receiver has 90% of the blue finish with some minor wear on the high points and edges and a few light scratches and handling marks. The bolt has been cold blued and has a gray-brown patina on the balance with traces of light pitting. The loading gate retains about 60% of the high polish blue finish. The crescent buttplate has some finish loss on the heel but retains 80% of the original blue finish. The case colors on the hammer and lever have faded to an even, gray brown, patina. The fine scroll and border engraving and detailed game scenes are very sharp. The fancy grade walnut stock and forearm are both in very fine condition with scattered minor handling marks. The checkering on the pistol grip and forearm is slightly flattened from handling. The very fine stock and forearm retain close to 90% of the high polish finish. This is a rare example of a factory engraved, special order, Winchester Model 1892 Fancy Sporting Rifle. Provenance: Robert M. Lee Collection.
