Description:

Smith & Wesson No. 2 Lever-Action pistol manufactured c. 1854. This large frame .41 caliber pistol has the rarely encountered six inch barrel. The pistol has the distinctive part-round/part-octagon barrel with integral magazine, toggle lever with round finger hole and two-piece rosewood grips with flared butt. This pistol has the Type II features which include: (1) distinctive hump on the top of the frame, (2) two spring screws on the bottom of the frame, (3) crowned muzzle and (4) T-bar magazine locking spring. The barrel has a small flattened cone front sight. A fixed L-shaped rear sight is mounted on the top of the frame. The hammer has border-less hand-cut knurling on the spur. The lever lacks the spur usually found on No. 2 pistols with eight inch barrels. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "CAST-STEEL/SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH CT/PATENT" in two lines using four different stamps. The serial number "30" is stamped on the lower right side of the frame beneath the grip and on the back face of the rear sight. The sides and top of the frame and back strap and the back of the hammer are decorated with simple scroll and leaf factory engraving. Smith & Wesson manufactured approximately 500 No. 2 Lever Action pistols c. 1854-55. Most of these pistols had eight inch barrels. No. 2 Lever Action pistols with six inch barrels are extremely rare.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The pistol is complete with some repair and extensive restoration. The barrel, frame and hammer have a mottled gray-brown patina with scattered pitting. The professionally made replacement barrel extension has been artificially aged to match balance of barrel, and there are file marks on the back strap. The open, scroll and leaf, factory engraving remains clear. The barrel markings are fully legible, and the serial numbers are sharp. The grips are replacements, and there is a professionally repaired crack in the right grip. This is a solid representative example of an extremely rare S&W No. 2 Lever Action Repeating Pistol with six-inch barrel. This historically important pistol would be a key addition to any advanced Smith & Wesson or Winchester collection.
