Elaborate Gilded Pair of Bohemian Percussion Conversion Pistols by Johann Adam Knod

A) Knod Percussion Pistol

This beautiful pair was crafted by Johann Adam Knod (1690-1751) of Carlsbad, Bohemia, in the first half of the 18th century. This pair has "I: ADAM. KNODT." on top of the barrels ("T" not usually found on his arms). Other highly ornate firearms with gilded brass fittings, various hunting scenes, elaborate scrollwork, and finely carved stocks by Knod are known. He was first active around 1708 to 1717 in Vienna and was granted the title of master gunmaker in 1719. He was one of the most talented Carlsbad school arms makers catering to the nobility who visited the Bohemian spa town.

ConditionVery good as period converted to percussion with 20% of the original gold finish in the protected areas, attractive aged patina on the brass, and fairly bright lock with minor pitting. The designs throughout and the markings remain crisp. The stock is very good with a crack in the wrist, distinct carving, some nice figure, and minor dings. Mechanically fine.
