Scarce Documented Special Order Winchester Model 1894 Extra Lightweight Takedown Short Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

The accompanying factory letter confirms the extra lightweight configuration with a 20 inch barrel chambered in 30 WCF, plain trigger, Lyman rear sight and factory documented "fancy finish" highly figured wood. The serial number was applied on August 16, 1905, and the rifle was received in the warehouse as well as shipped on October 7, 1905. It has a Lyman beaded blade front sight and a Marble's folding leaf rear sight on a barrel marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and the two-line nickel steel marking followed by "30 W.C.F." on the left side. The top of the barrel and receiver at the breech have a Winchester factory oval proof. The upper tang is marked with the two-line model/trade mark information. Sling eyelets are attached to the forend cap and underside of the buttstock. The highly figured forearm and straight grip stock have a high gloss finish. According to Winchester expert and author George Madis, "Of all guns introduced after 1890, the Model 94 30-30 was the most popular saddle gun and had earned the reputation of being 'the best there was.' Short rifles like this were surprisingly popular in the Southwest." All Winchesters with non-standard barrels are rare but special order lightweight shorter barreled examples are especially rare.

ConditionExtremely fine. The rifle retains 85% plus bright original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The wood is very fine with some minor scratches and retaining most of the attractive high gloss varnished finish (The factory letter documents it as "fancy finish"). Mechanically excellent. A scarce example a very attractive of a lightweight variation of the Model 1894 that is missing from even the most advanced Winchester collections.
