Manufactured in 1902. The factory letter confirms the caliber, extra light round barrel, 1/2 magazine, takedown configuration, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, and shotgun butt with harder rubber buttplate. It also lists "Winchester High Velocity" and confirms it was received in the warehouse and shipped on October 21, 1902, for order number 160578. The sights and wood grade are not mentioned. The barrel has a special order Lyman "Hunting Front Sight" with white insert and scarce Lyman folding leaf rear sight with two leaves. One leaf has a wide sighting "V," and the other has a flat top with bright triangle. A Lyman "N-Ni" receiver sight with extended locking lever is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with Winchester "Style H" checkering and high polish piano finish. The buttplate has "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co." embossed in a circle, and the hard rubber pistol grip cap is embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL" is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel mid-way between the rear sight and the receiver, and "45-70" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped and roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-" in one line. The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number "126466" in script numerals behind the rear tang screws. The left side of the barrel and upper left side of the receiver are stamped with British "NOT ENGLISH MAKE" proofmarks. British 1925-1955 "Encircled Crown/V" and "Encircled Crown/P" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the receiver and barrel along with 45 2.10" smokeless powder proofmarks. The top of the bolt is stamped with a circled "Crown/V" inspection mark.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle is all original and retains 90% of the original blue finish. 95% of the blue is present on the barrel; wear is limited to some tiny, scattered, spots of age discoloration. The Winchester markings are sharp. The magazine tip and sides of the forearm cap have some minor finish wear. The blue finish is thin on the takedown collar. The receiver retains 85% of the blue finish with handling wear along upper edges and some thinning on the bottom. There are traces of age spotting on the bottom of the receiver and upper and lower tang. The fire blue finish on the loading gate has faded to a mottled gray patina with 30% of the blue remain. Nearly all of the fire blue is present on the trigger. The hammer and lever retain 90% plus of the case colors. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm remain in very fine-excellent condition and retain 90% of the high polish piano finish. The checkering shows light handling wear. The hard rubber buttplate and pistol grip cap are in excellent condition. This is a very fine example of a British proofed special order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Takedown Lever Action Rifle.
