Special Order Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Saddle Ring "Trapper" Carbine with Rare Documented 17 Inch Barrel and Factory Letter

As documented in the included factory letter, this Model 1873 saddle ring carbine was shipped from the factory with a 17 inch barrel on July 24, 1882. Standard carbine barrels were 20 inches, making this a rare factory variation of the Model 1873. In fact, Model 1873 carbines were rarely ordered with any type of special order features. It has the third model receiver (dust cover with rear serrations on an integral central guide rail), and correctly lacks caliber markings. The barrel has carbine sights and is marked with the two-line address/patent information ahead of the folding ladder rear sight. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" between two foliate designs. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the frame. Mounted on a carbine stock, and the carbine buttplate with compartment holds a three-piece cleaning rod.

ConditionVery good as period replated. The carbine retains 60% of the possibly retailer applied nickel finish with the balance between smooth brown and gray patinas. There are some areas of moderate pitting. The wood is good with a long hairline crack near the upper tang and some minor chipping along the grain, dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A rare documented 17 inch Model 1873 carbine that will be a welcomed addition to any Winchester collection.
