Very Scarce Robert McCormick Virginia Contract Flintlock Musket Dated 1800

Irish immigrant Robert McCormick leased the Globe Mills near Philadelphia starting in 1798 and manufactured muskets and pistols on contract with the U.S. government. McCormick delivered approximately 2,005 muskets between 1797 and 1800 to the federal government and around 600-925 to the State of Virginia. He was unable to complete his contracts because he was thrown in debtor's prison in 1801. James Haslett, who was one of his employees, finished out his 1799 contracts and later ran the Virginia Manufactory. This example has a bayonet stud on the top of the barrel, blade front sight on the rear of the upper barrel band, "ROCK" and some other illegible markings on top of the barrel near the breech, a sunken "eagle head/P" proof on the left at the breech, "V" near the top of the lock between the cock and pan, "McCORMICK" near the bottom at the center of the lock, "GLOBE/MILL/1800" at the tail of the lock, "MW"at the tail of the trigger guard, and sling swivels on the middle barrel band and a stud on the front of the trigger guard. The "ROCK" marking on the barrel is likely part of a county/regimental marking as has been noted on other McCormick Virginia contract muskets. It may be for Rockingham or Rockbridge County or Rocky Mount. A collection tag for F.W. Roebling III is attached to the trigger guard which indicates this came out of his significant collection of colonial and early 19th century American arms.

ConditionVery good with a mottled blend of gray and brown patina and mild pitting along the iron. The frizzen appears to be a replacement as it does not match the rest of the lockplate assembly. It does not appear reconverted. The buttplate is heavily pitted. The refinished stock is also very good and has various small chips and slivers absent and some thin cracks with otherwise crisp flats. Mechanically fine.
