Manufactured in 1896, the second year of production. This rifle is one of the only 5,000 flat side receiver models manufactured by Winchester. Built on a John Browning patent, the Model 1895 was the first box magazine lever action rifle manufactured by Winchester. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with an octagon barrel in .40-72 caliber, plain trigger, and Lyman hunting front sight when received in the warehouse on February 4, 1897, and shipped on October 26, 1898. It is fitted with dovetailed beaded blade front, elevation adjustable rear, and Lyman receiver sights. The top barrel flat has the two-line address and "40-72 WCF," the upper tang has the two-line model marking, and the patent dates are marked directly behind the trigger. The forearm features an ebony insert at the tip.
