This rifle is accompanied by a factory letter that describes this Model 1892 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 25/20, Barrel Type: Octagon, Barrel Length: 28 inches, Trigger: Set" and "Fancy stock, Checkered stock". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on March 24, 1905. The rifle has a full octagon, extra long, 28-inch barrel with full length magazine. Any extra long barrel is very rare on a Model 1892 rifle, particularly in a rifle chambered for the 25/20 cartridge. Non-standard length barrels were discontinued by Winchester in 1908 due to lack of demand. The barrel has a "Semi-Jack" front sight with brass bead and a sporting style buckhorn rear sight with screw-adjustable insert. A Lyman folding combination sight with coarse knurled stem is mounted on the receiver tang. The receiver has rare double set triggers. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain, 3X walnut with checkered panels and a high gloss piano finish. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, bolt and set-triggers have a blue finish. The loading gate is niter blue. The hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.PATENTED OCTOBER 14, 1884." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "25-20 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat behind the rear sight. The serial number is roll-stamped across the front edge of the bottom of the receiver.
