Rare and Highly Desirable U.S. Springfield "Gas Trap" M1 Garand Semi-Automatic Rifle

This is an exceptional all correct, U.S. Springfield Armory "Gas Trap" M1 Garand Rifle that was manufactured circa April 1940. It has an original unmodified Gas Trap receiver, unlike most that were altered to prevent the 7th round stoppage issue, that is stamped: "U.S. RIFLE/CAL..30 M1/SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/36428". The receiver has a smooth dark gray type parkerized finish, and the barrel has the same type of finish as the receiver. The chamber end of the barrel has a combined partially dark parkerized and polished end appearance. The right side of the barrel has "X" stamped below the handguard clip and a "P" proofmark with a punch-mark in the center stamped just before the step. It is fitted with the correct first revision bolt that is stamped on top with: D28287-1/J 7". The rifle has the correct, early, "long channel" stock with checkered buttplate, with no butt-trap and no drawing number on the side. The butt has the correct "large over small hole" configuration. The left side of the stock is stamped with a faint "SA/SPG" final inspection mark and a circled, serifed "P" proofmark is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The stock has no visible rebuild marks. The front handguard has the "lip type" front ferrule and both the upper and lower handguard bands are grooved. The rifle is fitted with a stainless steel, second variation gas cylinder with "D-28289-1" drawing number on the top of the lower band. The gas cylinder is fitted with a second pattern, blued front sight with the drawing number: "SA12703-0" on the right side and late pattern gas plug with no lightening hole. The gas cylinder, plug and sight all appear to be original. The bullet guide, trigger guard, safety and rear sight cover are correct for the rifle and have the proper drawing numbers. The windage knob has the fine checkering found on early production rifles. The elevation knob has solid arrows. It is fitted with an earlier unmarked operating rod, that has the early style two piece operating rod spring. The spring is fitted with the second pattern, round cross section operating rod spring guide. Provenance from the Allan Cors collection, a renowned high end martial arms collection.

ConditionExcellent with 90% plus of the original parkerized finish overall, edge and high spot wear, and finish loss on the receiver side rails and top areas of the bolt. The complete gas system (gas cylinder, plug and lock) are all in the white. The stock and handguards are all in very fine condition with a nice matching dark brown color showing minor/light pressure dents in some areas mixed with some light scratches from field use. The cartouches and firing proof are distinct. This is a really high condition, late production, early Gas-Trap M1 Garand rifle that would be a centerpiece of any advanced U.S. military collection and an ideal investment quality rifle.
