This gun is similar to guns made for hunting on horseback in the Germanic states and Austria. They are sometimes referred to as "breast-pistols" or "stutzers." It likely dates to around the 1730s-1740s. The lock has "PENISCH" on the edge above the frizzen spring, "A. ROSSE" on the edge below, and scrollwork engraving. The inside has been marked "WOODCOCK HILL/BENTON, PA." The barrel has blade and notch sights and seven-groove rifling. It has double set triggers and brass furniture with a variety of cast and engraved patterns, including scrollwork, floral patterns, dogs on the trigger guard, and a pair of figures appearing to make an offering on the side plate. The stock has raised relief acanthus scroll carving and a shallow cheekpiece.
