This is an example of a late WWII Underwood production M1 carbine that has been converted into the infrared sniper model by equipping it with early post WWII M3 Infrared sniper scope system. The M3 infrared sniper scope was the second generation infrared scope that was developed after WWII that saw the majority of its use in Korea. These later scopes are identified by the large infrared emitter on top of the scope itself as well as having the rear sight removed with the M3 conversion/mounting bar installed on top of the carbine. The scope nomenclature plate is marked "CORPS OF ENGINEERS U.S. ARMY/TELESCOPE/SNIPERSCOPE INFRARED/20,000 VOLTS/AMERICAN OPTICAL Co./ Buffalo N.Y." It is marked "DATED 8-31-50" and is numbered "M3. 3398.50". The carbine has the standard receiver markings with serial number, "2806925", and the barrel is marked "UNDERWOOD/4-44". It is fitted with a mix of early and late WWII parts such as the flat bolt, type III front barrel band/bayonet lug, flip safety, M marked magazine release. It has the standard M1 carbine stock with the oval oiler slot and is stamped with a large "JLB" in the sling slot. The left side is stamped "AAW" with a large single uncircled "P" proof in the grip area, and it has a modified two rivet handguard. This scope system is complete with its front pistol grip/trigger assembly, heavy electrical cable, power pack, battery, black rubberized back-pack, a green web sling, and original M3 flash hider.
