Nimschke New York Panel Scene Engraved Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 "Old Army" Revolver with Case

Manufactured after the Civil War. The revolver features a highly desirable and rare L.D. Nimschke New York engraving. Masterful scrollwork on a stippled background indicative of work by Nimschke is profusely featured on the frame, cylinder, and rear barrel section, and additional engraved motifs appear on the back strap, around the barrel rib marking, and at the muzzle. A mythical beast head is amongst the scrollwork on the right side of the frame. Similar scrollwork along with the beast head is documented in a collection of Nimschke's pulls gathered by R.L. Wilson in "L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver" (page 44). British proofs are stamped on the cylinder and barrel. The right grip panel is numbered to the gun. Matching assembly marks are on the grip frame, barrel, and cylinder. Comes with a period partitioned mahogany case.

ConditionVery fine, retaining 70% original blue finish with the balance a mix between smooth brown and gray patinas. 50% original case colors remain on the hammer. The engraving is crisp. The grips are also very fine with typical hairline age cracking on the bottom, some minor handling marks and attractive color and grain. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with minor handling/storage marks and typical high spot wear on the faded lining. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
