Desirable U.S. Ainsworth Inspected Colt Cavalry Model Single Action Army Revolver with Holster

Manufactured in 1874. O.W. Ainsworth's desirable "A" inspector mark is found on the barrel, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. A "P" proof is found on the barrel and cylinder. It has the one-line Hartford barrel address, two-line patent dates and "U.S." frame markings, correct bullseye ejector rod head and matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, and barrel. The loading gate has the assembly number "294." The left side of the grip has traces of a script letter cartouche. Based on serial data complied by Kopec and Fenn, this revolver falls into the 6517-7527 serial number range of Cavalry Models issued to the 3rd and 7th Cavalries. This group of Cavalries was shipped from the Springfield Armory in May 1874. Included is a U.S. Model 1885 leather flap holster featuring the Lanz Owen & Co. of Chicago marking on the belt loop. Ainsworth physically inspected SAA revolvers recorded in the serial number range 200 through 14343. This was the first major block of U.S. Cavalry revolvers.

ConditionVery good. Strong traces of original blue finish remain on the barrel and ejector rod housing, slight traces of faded original blue finish remain in the sheltered areas on the trigger guard, and patterns of original case colors remain on the frame, otherwise the revolver has a smooth brown-gray patina. The end of the cylinder pin head is ground off with several deep semi-circular gouges visible on the bottom of the barrel and ejector rod housing in this area. The grip is good with worn high edges, couple small chips near the butt and minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The holster is fine with typical flex wear, minor handling marks and overall tight stitching.
