Fine Theophilus Richards Brass Barrel Percussion Blunderbuss with Spring Bayonet

Theophilus Richards, father of the famous William Westley Richards, was active in Birmingham from 1779 until 1826. The lock is marked "Theops/Richards" in fine script and has been converted to a percussion hammer. The lock once had a safety catch which is now partially absent. The barrel is marked "London" on the top flat and has two British proofs on the upper left flat. The barrel, trigger guard, and buttplate are all of brass, with light engraving of Brittania's shield on the trigger guard and a bow and arrow on the buttplate. The barrel is fitted with a spring loaded bayonet (11 1/4 inch blade) with catch at the breech and lock at the muzzle. Mounted with a straight grain stock with a with fine checkering at the wrist. The bore is estimated above and flares out to 1 1/4 inches at the muzzle.

ConditionFine as period converted to percussion, showing mostly a smooth grey patina on iron parts with some scattered very light pitting and an attractive antique patina on the brass with a few areas showing a darker patina. The pull tab of the safety catch is broken off. The wood is also fine with numerous minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, a couple minor cracks, and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.
