Description:

This M1 Garand Type II National Match (NM) rifle was assembled by Springfield Armory in 1962. The serial number, "6084730" indicates the receiver was manufactured by Springfield Armory in April 1956. The right side of the barrel chamber is stamped with the five-pointed star followed by "NM". These markings were used by Springfield Armory to identify 1962 NM production rifles. The barrel is dated "S-A-2-52"; high quality 1952 dated barrels were used for production of NM rifles until they were exhausted in 1963. The right side of the barrel chamber is also stamped with a "P" proof with punch-mark in the center, a "T" (Targeted) mark and a second "P" proof near the date. The rifle has the distinctive 1962 Type II features which include: (1) rear sight base marked "NM/2" on the right side, (2) hooded rear sight aperture marked "595" on the top, (3) "NM" marked windage knob, (4) "7790722-RA" operating rod marked "NM" on the handle, (5) barrel stamped "NM" on the left side between the gas cylinder rings, (6) "NM" marked gas cylinder and (7) "NM/062" front sight. The stock is glass bedded and the front hand guard is glued to the lower barrel band. The last four digits of the serial number "4730" are marked in white on the bottom of the trigger guard housing floor plate and on the inside of the stock barrel channel. The left side of the stock is stamped with the boxed "Eagle/Star" National Defense final inspection mark. An encircled, serif, "P" proof mark is stamped on the inside of the proof mark. The surface of the receiver is smooth with crisp markings on the heel; it shows no sign of the rough finish found on earlier M1 NM receivers that were previously issued and overhauled by Springfield to Type II configuration. The single star 1962 NM barrel mark and "NM" on the chamber and absence of earlier NM barrel codes indicate that this rifle was a new NM rifle built in 1962 and not an earlier production NM rifle updated with 1962 components. The 1962 and 1963 production M1 NM rifles were the final version of the M1 NM rifle and incorporated the most advanced components and accuracy enhancements. The 1962 Type II NM rifles were issued and sold by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship for competition until 1973. Original, unaltered, examples of the high quality 1962 M1 Type II NM rifle are scarce.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, as issued. This rifle shows very limited handling and cycling wear and retains 98% plus of the Springfield Armory gray-green parkerized finish. The barrel still has the original paper sleeve in the bore. The muzzle crown shows no wear. The stock and hand guards are in perfect condition; wear is limited to one tiny (1/8-inch) dent on the lower left side of the upper handguard. The markings on all of the metal components are crisp. The final inspection mark and proof mark are extremely sharp. This is an outstanding example of a 1962 production Springfield Armory Type II NM in perfect condition. It would be difficult to find a better example of this scarce and very desirable M1 rifle.
