Very Scarce World War II XA Serialized U.S. Inland M1 Carbine Cutaway with History

This is a very scarce example of a WWII era US M1 Carbine manufactured by the Inland Division of General Motors that has been cut away on the right side as a training/demonstrator model. The front and rear bridges of the receiver have both been cut away with the front section marked "U.S. CA/CAL." and the rear section marked "INLA/XA". The barrel still retains its full markings of "INLAND DIV/GENERAL MOTORS/4-43". The entire right side of the carbine has been nicely cut away to expose all the inner workings of the carbine. Additionally, it has been cutaway through the chamber area, the top rear section of the receiver, the side of the operating rod and barrel/gas block and gas piston area. This carbine will show all the inner workings of the model as if in an armorer training school. The stock and handguard are both early Inland manufacture that has the "IO" markings but no cartouches or proofs. Included with the item is a letter from the auction/appraisal firm Clem Long Incorporated, dated February 26, 1970, identifying the item as purchased from the estate of Harvey D. Geyer. Geyer, originally an engineer with Dayton-Wright Airplane Company and close friend of the Wright brothers from 1910 until the death of Orville in 1948, would be a founding team member for Inland in the 1920s. The exact circumstances of him receiving the cutaway are unknown, but many U.S. firms are known to have repurposed their experimental, demonstrator, and prototype weapons into presentation gifts for retirees and prominent friends. NOTE: The letter describes the item as an "M2", but we believe this to be in error; no M2 markings are present, an M2 parts kit is not installed, and the barrel date precedes development of the M2. Also, the XA serial number is documented as being M1 only!

ConditionExcellent. A few minor scuffs and light spots are present on the parkerized metal, and the cut areas show a strong bright red finish. The trigger housing pin is absent. Some light scuffs, stains and dents are present on the wood. The mechanism is in good order, demonstrating all the core functions of the carbine. A scarce wartime training aid, documented to one of the big movers at Inland.
