Very Rare Framed Colorized "At CK Ranch August 1906" Print by L.A. Huffman Depicting "Montana's Cattle King": Conrad Kohrs from the Conrad Kohrs Warren Estate

This hand tinted photograph by Laton Alton Huffman (1879-1931) captures a discussion between horse breaker and range foreman Billy Crowder (left), foreman Jim Spurgeon (center), and "Montana's Cattle King" Conrad Kohrs (right). Kohrs was a German immigrant and worked nearby our facilities in Davenport, Iowa, as a butcher. Like Granville Stuart and other famous Montanans, he went to the West in search of gold found his wealth not in ore but in livestock. He was the president of the Montana Stock Growers Association and one of the most successful cattle barons. Crowder is holding the reins of a saddled bay tinted horse and the wheel of a wagon is just behind him, and to the viewer's right is a what was likely a corn crib attached to a building. Jim Spurgeon was previously foreman of the DHS Ranch in the late 19th century. That ranch was famously formed by Granville Stuart and his business partners and once home to Stuart. The bottom of the print is marked "At CK Ranch August 1906 [copy right logo] LA Huffman." The print measures roughly 14 3/4 by 18 3/4 inches, and the frame measures 17 3/4 by 22 inches. The back of the frame has markings indicating it came from the estate of Conrad Kohrs's grandson Conrad Kohrs Warren (1907-1993) in 1993. Warren took over the ranch in 1932. The Grant-Kohrs Ranch is now a national historic site. Provenance: The John Fox Collection

ConditionThere is a small slit in the print on the Spurgeon's left leg, a minor spot of discoloration between him and the horse, and otherwise only very minimal wear on the print. The frame has some slight chips and mild wear.
