This blunderbuss, larger in scale than the more usual late 18th / early 19th century examples encountered, was built into its current form in circa 1760-70, the barrel being approximately 100 years older and is struck with a maker’s mark which could be for either Robert Silk or Robert Stedman, both recorded 17th century London gunmakers. Two stage barrel, the forward section flared at the muzzle, the breech section octagonal to polygonal, with a raised molding at the rear notched to form a back sight, and with iron tang. Rounded border and scroll engraved lock. Figured walnut full stock carved in low relief with a shell around the barrel tang. Full brass furniture including trigger guard, butt plate and pierced side plate cast and chased in low relief with martial trophies. Brass capped wooden ramrod. The barrel struck with London proof marks.
