Rare and Desirable Colorized Print of the Custer Battlefield in 1879 by L.A. Huffman

Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) arrived in Miles City, Montana Territory, in 1879 and took the job of post photographer at Fort Keogh, and that same year photographed the nearby battlefield from George Armstrong Custer's famous last stand three years prior. The bones in this artistically composed photograph appear to be the same ones seen next to the grave marker for Colonel Keogh in another photograph by Huffman during the preservation of the battlefield as a national cemetery in 1879. The print has a small 1913 dated L.A. Huffman copyright mark in white above "CUSTER BATTLEFIELD, 1879" and "LA Huffman" in black. The visible portion of the print is 6 3/4 by 7 3/4 inches, and it is matted and measures 11 by 13 inches. Provenance: The John Fox Collection

ConditionVery good with minimal aging of the print, light discoloration of the matting, and distinct scene. This would be an excellent addition to any western themed gun room, especially for display with weapons associated with Custer's Last Stand at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
