"Huffman Pictures" Marked American Bison Skull

This American bison skull is marked "HUFFMAN/PICTURES" on top with an "Hm" cattle brand style logo below it. It is possible this skull was used as a sign to mark the studio of Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931). Huffman arrived in the Montana Territory in 1879 and became the post photographer at Fort Keogh. From there he documented the changing ways of life on the frontier through portraits of the people, as well as the wildlife, industries, and landscapes. The skull itself is heavily weathered showing the appearance of having been found on the frontier years after it was deposited there. It measures approximately 27 1/4 inches between the tips of the horns and approximately 20 inches from the snout to top of the skull. There is a length of wire attached for hanging. Provenance: The John Fox Collection

ConditionFine as showing a heavily weathered appearance, embodying the harsh climate of the American frontier from whence it came.
