Early 19th Century Charleville Style Flintlock Pike-Musket with Extendable Spear and Folding Buttstock

Early 19th century Charleville style flintlock pike-musket with a 4 3/8 foot extendable spear underneath the barrel and a fold-out buttstock that locks to become a pointed end. The purpose for a contraption such as this is for a soldier to be able to plant the pointed butt in the dirt while holding at a forty-five degree angle with the spear extended to defend against charging cavalry; a common practice of the time with standard bayonets affixed on flintlock muskets. With the butt plate extended and locked in place, and the spear locked out at its furthest extension, the overall length is 9 1/2 feet! The side plate escutcheon is marked "IN". The band springs are located behind the iron barrel bands. A rectangular iron lug is located on top of the barrel. Includes a wooden spearhead sheath for the extendable spear. This pike-musket was intended as a way to create extra distance between the user and enemy in a time when combat was more commonly fought close quarters. One of the most interesting evolutionary long arms we have ever had the chance to offer at auction! Provenance: The George Moller Collection

ConditionVery good, with mostly bright polished surfaces, some scattered light pitting, and scattered mild pitting on the spear tip. Stock is good with cracks and absent sections in the spear channel. Mechanically fine. A rare one-a-kind item that would certainly make a fine addition to any advanced military small arms or early weapons collection!
