Detailed, Japanese Signed, Relief Carved Antique Ivory Turtles Cane with Ebonized Shaft

This highly detailed cane was likely made sometime during the 19th century, during the time when enigmatic Japan was beginning to open itself to the wider world. The "L" shaped, antique ivory handle is masterfully relief carved to show five turtles basking on a log, with a small escutcheon on one side marked with two, red enamel filled, Japanese characters that are likely the signature of the artist. The handle is joined to the smooth ebonized shaft with a German silver band, and the shaft is tipped with dark horn.

ConditionVery fine, the handle showing an attractive lightly aged appearance with a few faint age lines and crisp detailed carving. The ebonized shaft is excellent, retaining almost all of the black finish with only the slightest handling marks, and the tip shows a few hairline cracks and light wear.
