Exceptional Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army Revolver in .44-40 W.C.F. Attributed to Country Music Artist "Pancake Pete" Newman of the Sleepy Hollow Gang

Approximately 25,000 Model 1875s were manufactured between 1875 and 1889 with this example being in outstanding condition. The top of the barrel is "E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. N.Y. U.S.A." The front flat of the frame on the left side is stamped "44," the caliber designation for .44 WCF. The revolver features a blade front sight, a frame notch rear sight partially high lighted in red paint, the standard web-contoured ejector rod housing, and a fluted cylinder. The serial number is marked on the left side of the grip frame. Both grip panels are numbered to the gun. The back of the left grip panel is hand marked "1941 PETE NEWMAN/SLEEPY HOLLOW/RANCH." The bottom of the left grip panel is hand marked "U.M." "Pancake Pete" Newman was a member of the western musical group the Sleepy Hollow Gang. The original members were Newman and his bother Elmer and sisters Sophia and Julie Murray. Pete and Sophie married in 1936, and a year later Elmer married Julie. They ran a country music themed amusement park known as the Sleepy Hollow Ranch in Quakertown, PA, from 1940 to 1963. In 1963, fire destroyed the park which had for over twenty years entertained guests with live farm animals, dancing, pony rides and live music from nationally known acts such as Gene Autry, Elton Britt, and Roy Acuff as well as other local artists throughout the summer season. Prior to establishing the amusement part, the Sleepy Hollow Gang regularly entertained radio listeners in the Great Lake region from 1937 to 1939.

ConditionExceptionally fine, retaining 95% plus original nickel plating with some high edge wear. The grips are fine with some chipping and wear along the high edge and a number of minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. An exceptional Remington Model 1875 Revolver that will be a welcome addition to any American antique collection.
